A PUTTER IS THE MOST IMPORTANT ITEM IN YOUR BAG
– the only club (good fortune aside) that is essential on every hole. Whatever improved performance is
claimed through ‘new technology’ putting is the exception. It is all in
the eye and the mind….. confidence in yourself and your putter. Experience enhanced response and feel with a vintage hickory putter …. and no need to abandon your
modern clubs to accommodate one in your bag. At the very least, you will be holding a part of golfing tradition that
will only appreciate in value.
CLUBS FOR COLLECTORS, HICKORY PLAYERS AND ALL GOLFERS
ABOUT OUR CLUBS
We
think, as most things vintage, that old putters are at their best
when in as original condition as practical.
Most
of our putters will date from 1890s to early 1920s, and the heads will
typically be stamped with a cleek mark and other identifying detail
relating to the clubmaker, supplier, professional and club.
We
offer a varied range of interesting and playable vintage hickory golf clubs
at particularly realistic prices and

FORGED HEADS
The
early iron heads were produced by general blacksmiths, and with the growing
popularity of golf in Scotland, some turned their hand to simply
producing golf heads – they became known as cleekmakers. Many
cleekmakers created their own cleek mark, such as a hand (George Nicoll
of Leven) or a star (William Gibson, Kinghorn), and in the absence a
name, these are often the only identification. The
forged head will generally include other information, such as the model
name, club-maker, and golf club at
which he was based. Many of our putters originate from such famous
clubs as Carnoustie, North Berwick, Prestwick and St. Andrews.
ALUMINIUM HEADS
There
were several producers of aluminium headed clubs, particularly putters,
but by far the most well-known is the Standard Golf Co. of Sunderland.
Founded by William Mills in the early 1890’s, the company soon received
patent and were producing long-nose putters before the turn of the
century. Earlier clubs were generally stamped with both the company
name and Mills, although following James Braid’s many successes with the
putter, an association was formed and Mills became Braid Mills. The
long-nose putter was followed by a variety of models, particularly
variations of the very popular mallet-style head.
